Crestor is a cholesterol-lowering medication that lowers LDL cholesterol when taken together with a healthy diet and regular exercise. It also lowers triglycerides, an important fatty-acid for the body. Crestor is available in tablet form and is usually taken once a day. It's important to follow the directions on the package for best results.
Crestor may be used to reduce the risk of developing heart attacks, strokes, and other heart problems in people with a family history of atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat in the family).
Crestor is used in adults and children over the age of 6 years. Crestor may also be used in children and adolescents over the age of 12 years.
Crestor works by blocking the enzyme 5-lipoprotein (a protein in the body that lowers cholesterol) that is responsible for lowering LDL cholesterol. It reduces the amount of cholesterol made by the liver and blocks some of the bad cholesterol that is released in the blood.
Crestor is taken at least one hour before exercise, and it should only be taken as a whole, even when taken with food. Crestor should be taken with a meal or snack, and it can be taken with or without food.
Crestor may cause serious side effects, including:
These side effects usually go away on their own as the body adjusts to the medication. However, if you experience any of these symptoms, talk to your doctor.
In rare cases, Crestor can cause more serious side effects. Tell your doctor right away if you have any of the following side effects:
It's important to continue taking the medication as prescribed by your doctor. You may need a blood test to determine if Crestor is helping you. Your doctor may need to adjust your dose or switch you to a different medication.
If you have any questions about why Crestor has been prescribed for you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
If you have any of the following conditions that may make you more prone to Crestor side effects, you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist:
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
Crestor should not be used by children under the age of 12 years.
Crestor should not be taken by anyone who is taking any other cholesterol-lowering medications, including Crestor.
Crestor can interact with other medications and supplements. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medications, vitamins, and herbal products you use (including prescription and non-prescription drugs).
Some of the drugs that can interact with Crestor include:
Crestor may decrease the effectiveness of some medications. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about how to increase your Crestor dosage safely and effectively.
The Food and Drug Administration is advising consumers not to purchase or use CVS-Pharmacy’s cholesterol-lowering statin Crestor, a prescription drug used to help reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, among consumers who have heart disease or risk factors for these conditions. The Food and Drug Administration has not received any reports of serious skin reactions or other adverse events in patients who received these drugs.
The FDA issued ablack-box alert (BDA) for Crestor in July 2018, advising consumers to stop using the drug and to seek medical advice from their doctor if they experienced skin reactions, unusual bruising, unusual bleeding, unusual bruising, blood or dark urine, or unusual skin reactions, especially if they have or have had a history of a heart attack or stroke. The FDA advised consumers not to buy or use this product or any other product that contains this drug in the third or subsequent three months unless advised by their doctor. Consumers should exercise caution and be cautious when consuming dietary supplements or products that contain dietary fat. The FDA advises that consumers should consult their doctor before taking any prescription medication, including these products, if they have heart disease or risk factors for these conditions.
“Crestor, a prescription medication used to help reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, is contraindicated in patients with a history of stroke or heart-related problems,” the FDA issued a BDA in July 2018. “Crestor should be used with extreme caution in patients with a history of heart problems, stroke or high blood pressure, as this medication may increase the risk of stroke or blood clots.”
The FDA advised consumers to avoid using Crestor in patients with a history of heart problems or who have a previous history of cardiovascular disease, stroke or blood clots.
The FDA advises consumers to purchase or use Crestor in the following cases:
“Although it is not clear what happened to Crestor, we believe it is important to emphasize that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the sole responsibility of the manufacturer of the drug and may not release information about safety information that may be provided to the FDA by drug manufacturers,” the FDA issued a BDA in August 2018. “Health care professionals and patients should be cautious when using dietary supplements or products containing dietary fat because these products may be unsafe for certain individuals.”

Crestor has been recalled in the U. S. because it could lead to serious heart problems, a new study showsA new study shows that some prescription drugs can cause serious skin reactions, including heart attacks and strokes.
In the heart-attack-risk-compared drug group, the risk of heart attack and stroke was the same for Crestor and Crestor CR (rosuvastatin calcium), a drug that helps lower cholesterol levels in the blood. The risk of heart attack was higher in the Crestor group, the researchers found.
The study, which was conducted in the early 1990s, found that the combination of rosuvastatin calcium and simvastatin calcium, the statin used to lower cholesterol, led to more severe heart attacks among patients taking Crestor or other statins. The most common side effects were headache, fatigue, low back pain, and muscle pain.
The researchers also found that patients taking the rosuvastatin group had an increased risk of stroke.

Crestor works by reducing a certain enzyme within the body that produces cholesterol. It belongs to a class of medications called statins.
Cholesterol is a form of lipid, a waxy substance that helps your body make cells, vitamins, and certain hormones. It is not inherently bad. Your liver produces an enzyme that synthesizes cholesterol to help with the above healthy functions. Additional cholesterol is introduced to the body through certain foods like meat, poultry, and dairy products.
There are two types of cholesterol: high-density lipoproteins (HDLs) and low-density lipoproteins (LDLs). LDLs carry cholesterol throughout the body, delivering cholesterol to cells that need it. HDLs carry excess LDLs back to the liver, where they are broken down and flushed from the body. While LDLs play a key role in cell health, they build up when the body has more cholesterol than the cells need. This buildup turns into plaque in the arteries (blood vessels). As plaque covers the artery walls, the blood vessels become narrow. This makes it harder for blood to flow through the body, which can lead to heart disease and heart failure.
Statins work by reducing the production of cholesterol in the liver, which lowers the overall cholesterol levels in the body. Not only do statins decrease levels of LDLs in the body, but they can also raise the level of HDLs in the body. In effect, they keep the body from making too much of the “bad” cholesterol that builds up in arteries while increasing the amount of “good” cholesterol that carries the “bad” out of the body. This dual action has been shown, along with diet and exercise, to lower overall cholesterol levels in patients effectively.
